currituck_beach_lighthouse_corolla_north_carolinaAfter being closed to the general public since late-November, Currituck Beach Lighthouse located in Corolla, NC finally reopened to climbers beginning March 28, 2014.

The 158 foot-tall structure consists of 220 steps, one million bricks and is easily the tallest structure on the Outer Banks north of Bodie Island Lighthouse. The all red brick lighthouse opened December of 1875 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Visitors who make it to the top of the lighthouse enjoy panoramic views of the Currituck Sound and Atlantic Ocean that are unparalleled from any other vantage point on the Outer Banks.

Visitors can climb all the way to the top from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. every day from now until this Thanksgiving. Tickets are $8 for ages 8 and up and children 7 years and under are free. Climbing hours will be extended to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the busy tourism months of June, July and August.

While visiting the lighthouse grounds, be sure to check out the restored Keepers’ House and also stop by the various exhibits that offer an in-depth history of the lighthouse, area shipwrecks and the previous tenants that used to operate the lighthouse beacon.

Tour groups are welcome and special rates are available for school groups as well as non-profit groups. Arrangements must be made at least 3 weeks in advance with the site manager who can be contacted via phone at 252.453.8152. Professionally guided tours are provided for groups of 15 or more climbers. Smaller group tours are self-guided.

Please note: Cash, checks and domestic traveler’s checks are accepted forms of payment for climbing the lighthouse. Credit cards will NOT be accepted.

Directions:
At the junction of Highway 158 and Route 12, take Route 12 heading north towards Duck and Corolla. The lighthouse entrance is 20 miles from the junction, on the left, just beyond the Currituck Heritage Park sign. You may also enter at Currituck Heritage Park and ask the guide at the entrance for directions from there.
